Washington, D.C. - The Farmworker Justice organization recently announced that Lupe Martinez, the UMOS President and CEO will be honored at their October 10th Wine and Jazz reception for his decades of service at the United Migrant Opportunity Services (UMOS), a non-profit organization. Martinez has served in various positions within UMOS and has been the President and CEO for the past 44 years. Martinez is married to Patricia Martinez.
In 1974, Martinez became the fifth executive director of UMOS. UMOS employs hundreds of people and provides services to migrant workers in the state including other social programs, training, child development and a workforce development center that serves approximately 3K W-2's job seekers as well as the Latina Resource Center for domestic abuse victims.
In September 2017, Martinez was inducted into the Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs, (AFOP) "Advocates Hall of Fame" in Las Vegas, Nevada.
UMOS programs operate throughout the state of Wisconsin, as well as in Minnesota, Missouri, Texas and Florida, along with a housing consortium in an eight-state area.
In December 2016, UMOS opened a new office in Florida City, Florida to explore future opportunities. UMOS successfully competed and were awarded a $4.3 million contract to operate four CareerSource South Florida centers in Opa-Locka, Carol City, Key Largo, and Key West, Florida.
In May 2017, UMOS in partnership with ArtWorks of Milwaukee unveiled the Latino Historical Mural Project at S. 1st Street and W. Historic Mitchell Street in Milwaukee's Southside depicting more than 50 years of UMOS, migrant and the Latino community history in Wisconsin. UMOS also sponsors the annual Mexican Independence Parade in Milwaukee.
UMOS also holds their annual awards banquet to honor community recipients for Man of the Year, Woman of the Year, Family of the Year and Youth of the Year awards.
According to the UMOS website, UMOS, is a "non-profit advocacy organization, provides programs and services which improve the employment, educational, health and housing opportunities of under-served populations. UMOS began as a single-focused, single state, migrant and seasonal farm worker serving agency only. Today, UMOS offers diverse programs and services to diverse populations with a diverse staff. Currently, UMOS operates 40+ programs with more than $25 million grant and performance-based contracts from federal, state, and local funding sources.
