Milwaukee, Wisconsin - On Friday, Wisconsin State Representative Sylvia Ortiz-Velez (D-Milw) from the 8th Assembly District accused Deisy España, a former Democrat candidate for the 9th Wisconsin State Assembly District of "sour grapes" after losing her bid to get elected and telling people in her district that she wasn't going to vote for Kamala Harris (D) for U.S. President in November 2024. Ortiz-Velez even exposed and confirmed that España posted about it in social media that she wasn't going to vote for Harris.
According to Ortiz-Velez, España first contacted Ortiz-Velez in August 2024, and Ortiz-Velez then blocked España.
España alleged, that Ortiz-Velez after my election would go on my IG and start liking old pictures which made me uncomfortable because 1. She has me blocked on FB and 2. When I was running she was so disrespectful even her staff was talking about "just because you're Mexican and want a cool title doesn't mean you should run for office" "we need real leaders and people who are actually educated in office." España also posted on her Facebook (FB) three screens shots of their messaging encounter.
Ortiz-Velez had endorsed and helped elect Priscilla Prado (D-Milw) as Wisconsin State Representative in the 9th Wisconsin State Assembly District. España lost her bid in the primary election and Priscilla Prado (D) and Ryan Antczak (R) had a runoff in the General Election in November 2024, and Prado was elected to the 9th Wisconsin State Assembly District.
Voces de la Frontera endorsed and supported España.
Some of the España and Ortiz-Velez messaging texts about their squable over the elections in November 2024 are attached to article.
España posted 6 days ago the following on her FB account.
I'm not the type to bring stuff to social media but this is a state representative
For context, Sylvia Oritz after my election would go on my IG and start liking old pictures which made me uncomfortable because 1. She has me blocked on FB and 2. When I was running she was so disrespectful even her staff was talking about "just because you're Mexican and want a cool title doesn't mean you should run for office" "we need real leaders and people who are actually educated in office."
I essentially asked if I could help her with anything and she said no, how would I be able to help her, to which I responded with the above.
Again, I'm not one to bring stuff to social media but it's disgusting that an elected official talk to ANY person in this way. I hope that her constituents aren't talked to like that.
Btw- I am proud of my 31% and I worked so hard to get to where I am.
Ortiz-Velez in response to España on Friday, December 27, 2024, posted on her FB personal account.
I spent the better part of the year canvassing every single day and talking to my community about the importance of electing Kamala and what it would mean if Trump were elected.
A young woman who ran for office and who lost has a very bad case of sour grapes happening. I know losing is difficult. I understand to an extent. It doesn't mean you have permission to insult me. My understanding ends there.
She messaged me because she was looking for a fight and she insulted me. She also has failed to post the entire exchange.
Again, just to be crystal clear, she began messaging me and insinuating that I am lazy. Insinuating that I don't know my community.
When she was running for office she spent her time telling people she wasn't voting for Kamala and had made a social media post about it. Now she is portraying herself as so caring for DACA and that I am not. I am happy she cares about DACA but to portray that I don't, is an outright insult.
I passed more bills than many other legislatures and I resent any implication that I don't use my time wisely and that I am lazy.
No one should be questioning how I chose to spend my time. I am one of the hardest working legislators in Madison and I'm tired of the disrespect.
I also have noticed that as a Latina elected, a lot of the usual bullies feel very comfortable attacking me on a regular basis. But say nothing about other electeds that hold many of my same positions on some of the issues. For some reason, a certain group of people love to target elected Latina women. Now that I pointed it out, just watch and you won't be able to unsee it.
If you aspire to be an elected, you need to know that people that you may not like, might see your public instagram and sm posts.
They may even like some of the posts.
That's how instagram and sm works.
If that is too much for you and sets you off on an insulting rampage , I think public life may not be for you. And that's ok. Public life is hard. Not everyone can handle it.
But don't expect that you can send me private messages insulting me and that I will not reply and defend myself and my work.
I will be happy to accept an apology. I have many people that I once disagreed with, who are now close friends. I am not above accepting apologies.
