Ortiz Merced was sleeping in her bed on the second level when she was fatally injured by a gunshot that went through the ceiling of her room from the third floor.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin - On Friday, the Milwaukee Medical Examiner's Office identified Isdennyeliz Nicole Ortiz Merced, 10, as the victim of a fatal gunshot wound while she slept. Milwaukee police responded around 12:41 a.m. to the 2100 block of W. Orchard Street to a shooting.
Upon arrival, police located a 10-year-old girl on the second level of the home that was shot as she slept in her bed. Life-saving measures were applied but, the girl succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The Milwaukee Medical Examiner's Office declared Ortiz Merced deceased at 1:10 a.m., and declared it a homicide.
According to police, while Ortiz Merced was sleeping in her bed in the second level, a known suspect (family member) who was in the upper room (third level) while handling a handgun, accidentally fired a gunshot (bullet) that went through the floor striking Ortiz Merced in the chest as she slept in the lower level.
Police say, family members including Ortiz Merced and extended family shared the three-level home.
The known suspect (Ortiz Merced's 17-year-old cousin) fled the apartment and is being sought by police. Two vehicles were reported towed by police as well from the immediate property.
Ortiz Merced was a student at Albert E. Kagel School in the Southside of Milwaukee.
