Washington, D.C. - On Wednesday, members of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) came out publicly to denounce, condemn and asked for the resignation of their LULAC National President Roger C. Rocha Jr. for sending a letter to praise President Trump in support of his latest immigration reform plan. Rocha wrote, that Trump is "setting out a reasonable framework on immigration reform and border security."
An online petition calling for Rocha to immediately resign was initiated by LULAC members.
Trump's latest immigration reform was condemned by The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, a coalition of 45 of the nation's most preeminent Latino advocacy organizations, which is offended by and condemns the immigration framework released by the White House. Trump's announcement in September to end Obama's DACA program on March 5, 2018 caused the dilemma today of trying to find a solution for 800,000 DREAMers. Since September, at least 16,000 DREAMers have lost their legal status due to Trump's decision to end DACA.
LULAC National Vice President of the Midwest Joe Enriquez Henry and the Midwest Region's six state directors issued the following statement today in response to numerous requests from media for confirmation of LULAC's official position on U.S. President Donald Trump's immigration framework after a letter LULAC National President Roger Rocha sent to Trump was circulated:
"After reviewing the letter posted on numerous news sites that was allegedly sent by LULAC National President Roger Rocha to U.S. President Donald Trump, we can confirm its authenticity and clearly state that the position referenced therein, was never seen or approved by the LULAC National Board or Executive Committee. We look forward to working, as a united organization with clear purpose and direction, with Congressional leadership in crafting a bipartisan solution that will protect our DREAMers and DACA recipients, and puts our nation on a path to fix our broken immigration system."
We do not agree with the position taken by the National LULAC President.
The LULAC National Executive Committee approved the following statement on Wednesday to oppose their LULAC National President Rocha's recent letter to Trump in support of his immigration reform plan. The organization's official position on the DREAM Act is that "LULAC is adamantly opposed to President Trump’s recently released immigration framework which calls for $25 billion in US taxpayers’ money for an ineffectual wall between the US and Mexico, increased detention of immigrants, elimination of 5 out of the 7 categories of family-based immigration visas, and elimination of the diversity lottery visa program for underrepresented countries, among other draconian anti-immigrant policies.
"Further, we share the view of our members, coalition partners, and allies that President Trump’s hurtful, inaccurate, and inflammatory language toward immigrants and communities of color neither advances the interests of the country nor represents this nation’s values."
Brent A. Wilkes, the Chief Executive Officer of LULAC who has worked for 30 years with the organization released the following statement, "...I am deeply saddened and shocked by the letter sent by our organization’s President, Roger Rocha, to President Trump on January 28. In that letter, Mr. Rocha, on LULAC letterhead and without consulting our staff nor board, endorsed the four pillars of President Trump’s immigration reform framework, in a clear contradiction to the policies voted on by our members at our 2017 National Convention.
"My name is the second name that appears on that letterhead, underneath that of Mr. Rocha’s. For that reason, I want to state unequivocally that I reject Mr. Rocha’s endorsement of the President’s stance on immigration and can state with authority that his letter does not represent my personal views, nor those of many of the dozens of people with whom I have spoken...As for Mr. Rocha’s statement that “We at LULAC will continue to do our part in making your vision a reality,” I want to be very clear: the “we” that Mr. Rocha referred to does not include me personally, nor in my role as CEO of LULAC."
