In January 2023, 2 Milwaukee Police Officers And 2 Detectives Charged In Separate Incidents

Four members of the Milwaukee Police Department have being charged in separate incidents in January.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin - On January 20, 2023, Milwaukee Police Officer Martinese McDaniel, 30, was charged with two felony counts for child abuse-recklessly cause great harm to a child. If convicted, McDaniel is facing up to 15 years in prison and up to $50,000 in fines for each count. McDaniel remains free on a $5,000 cash bond.

According to the criminal complaint, on January 14, McDaniel and his girlfriend, the mother of a 10-month-old girl called 911 after her child couldn't breath. McDaniels was babysitting the toddler when she couldn't breath and he administered CPR and she began the breath again. Later, the child was taken to Children's Hospital for treatment and doctors found signs of child abuse. The toddler had bruises in her chest, a bleeding laceration and other bruises in her legs and arms.

McDaniel was suspended pending the outcome of the case.

On January 19, 2023, Travis Jung, 37, an off-duty Milwaukee Police Detective was taken into custody near the Black Swan MKE in the Third Ward District after a woman who was at the Black Swan attending a police recreation league gala allegedly complained that Jung groped her buttocks and vagina without her consent. Jung left the venue and was arrested outside of the venue at the 300 block of N. Water Street.

Jung is facing a Class A misdemeanor charge for 4th-degree sexaul assault. If convicted, Jung is facing up to 9-months in jail and up to $10,000 in fines.

According to the woman, she felt a slap in her buttocks and then felt Jung's hand go under her clothes and touch her vagina area.

The Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) confirmed that Jung has been in the department for 15 years.

Jung was booked in the Milwaukee County jail and later released on a $250.00 cash bond and has been fully suspended from the MPD until the outcome of the criminal case. The MPD is also conducting an internal investigation.

In an unrelated incident, off-duty Milwaukee Police Officer Rodney Albernathy Jr., 29, was taken into custody on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 around 10:00 p.m. at the 3700 block of W. Miller Lane for armed battery, but was not booked at the Milwaukee County jail and is pending charges. Albernathy Jr. was placed on administrative duties. He has been in the MPD for five years.

The other incident, on January 3, 2023, Milwaukee Police Detective Shaletta Whiters, 42, was charged with two misdemeanors for obstructing an officer and disorderly conduct. She has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.

If convicted, Whiters is facing up to 9-months in jail for obstructing an officer and $10,000 in fines, and 90-days in jail and $1,000 in fines for disorderly conduct. Whiters remains free on a $1,000 cash bond.
