Waukesha, Wisconsin - On Thursday, MAGA Waukesha County Sheriff Eric Severson announced that he won't remove nor suspend Waukesha County Sheriff Deputy Detective Joseph Mensah, 32, from duty pending the outcome of a homicide case connected to the murder of Jay Anderson Jr., 25, on June 2016 at the Wauwatosa Madison Park during an after-hours loitering violation.
Last Wednesday, Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Glen H. Yamahiro found probable cause to criminally charge Mensah, a current Waukesha County Sheriff's deputy and former Wauwatosa police officer with a homicide charge for the Anderson murder in Wauwatosa.
Judge Yamahiro indicated that Mensah failed to deescalate the situation, didn't wait for backup, which was on the way and didn't used other options to avoid killing Anderson.
A special prosecutor will be assigned within the next 60 days to charge Mensah with a felony homicide charge.
According to the Milwaukee Police Department investigation, then Wauwatosa Police Officer Mensah went to Madison Park in regards to an after-hour loitering violation. Mensah who wasn't wearing a body video camera at the time claimed that Anderson reached for a handgun next to him and that he feared for his life and fired multiple shots striking Anderson five times in the head and another shot in the upper right shoulder. The police investigation result indicated that Mensah was justified in Anderson's homicide, according to the Milwaukee Police investigation report.
An independent investigation by former U.S. Attorney Steven Biskupic who was hired by the Wauwatosa Police and Fire Commission in July 2020 indicated that Mensah would most likely offend again. Biskupic wrote in the report that Mensah should be fired and that the risk he might shoot a fourth person is to great.
Mensah was also declared justified in the shooting deaths of Alvin Cole, 17, on February 2, 2020 at the Mayfair Mall parking lot and Antonio Gonzales, 29, on July 2015 for wielding a decorative sword.
Bernie Gonzalez, President of the SOPHIA Board of Directors on Thursday released the following statement,
"SOPHIA demands that, at the very least, Deputy Mensah be suspended from the Waukesha Sheriff's Department while these charges are proceeding. The hiring of Mensah originally sent a chilling message, especially to African-American residents of Waukesha County. To keep him in the Sheriff's department, allowing him to wear a uniform and carry a firearm in our community would not just be tone deaf, but a gesture of contempt for people of color who live in our County or who pass by on our roadways."
