Madison, WI - As of Friday, Governor Tony Evers (D) hasn't served the Latino electors who were instrumental in electing him as Governor. Evers has failed to eliminate the 287(g) ICE agreement with the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department (WCSD), which expired on June 30th and is being renewed, according to the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department. Governor Evers would have to approved the 287(g) agreement between ICE and the WCSD. The 287(g) agreement allows for the WCSD jail personnel to check the U.S. citizenship of those Latinos suspected of being undocumented who have been taken into custody for any traffic infraction or minor crimes.
The WCSD doesn't check all inmates processed at the jail for U.S. citizenship, but only people of color, according to sources.
Hispanic News Network U.S.A. (HNNUSA) contacted the media personnel for Governor Evers for comment, but no response has been released about the future of the 287(g) at the WCSD and state. Evers seems to lack any interest to serve the Latino community that elected him or his close advisors are not doing their job and informing him that the Latino electors want the 287(g) killed in the state, including at the WCSD.
Governor Evers attended a LULAC National Convention and Expo event this week, but failed to mention the 287(g) expiration or his intend to resolve the issue.
So far, it seems Governor Evers has distant himself from the Latino electors, which no doubt will most likely cost him re-election and could be ousted from office just like former Governor Scott Walker (R) who became anti-immigrant.
One thing for sure, Evers seems to be blind and deaf, and is ignoring the Latino community's quest to eliminate 287(g) at the WCSD and state.
Time will tell, if Evers will eventually wake up and actually do the job for what he was elected to do and eliminate the 287(g) ICE program.
Editor's note: LULAC members, Latinos and allies should call the Office of Governor Tony Evers at (608) 266-1212 and tell them/or leave a message that you want Governor Evers to ban 287(g) in the State of Wisconsin and not to approve the 287(g) ICE agreement with the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department that expired on June 30th.
