Green Bay, WI - On Friday, Hispanic News Network U.S.A. (HNNUSA) confirmed that Efrain García-Sotelo, 23, died while incarcerated at the Green Bay Correctional Institution (GBCI) with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections (WIDOC) prison system. He was attempting to file a postconviction motion on his case for double homicide charges. García-Sotelo's attorney would not comment on his death and referred all inquiries to the GBCI. The WIDOC no longer shows García-Sotelo registered as an offender on its website. No information about García-Sotelo's circumstances leading to his death in prison was made available by the GBCI assistant warden's office.
Tristan D. Cook, Communicatons Director from the WIDOC when contacted by HNNUSA on Friday by e-mail stated, "Mr. García-Sotelo died on February 9, 2016. The death is under review..." and would not elaborate further about the circumstances of death reported.
García-Sotelo pleaded guilty in June 2015 and was convicted for two felony counts for first-degree reckless homicide for the January 12, 2015 fatal stabbing of his sister, Martha Sotelo García, 26, and the January 15, 2015 fatal stabbing of his father, Moses García-Macias, 47, when he discovered his daughter's body in the closet.
García-Sotelo was sentenced to 35 years in prison on each count with mandatory incarceration of 25 years and 10 years supervision. The combined prison term total 70 years and were to be served consecutive to each other.
According to the criminal complaint, García-Sotelo confessed to police that he killed his sister because she was a bad mother to her children. He stabbed her in the chest and neck multiple times after the children went to school. Then he hid her body in the closet for three days until his father found the body three days later.
As García-Macias became emotional and began to cry, García-Sotelo then stabbed his father in the back multiple times. His two nieces ages 8 and 9, including his 46-year-old mother attempted to stop García-Sotelo from stabbing his father. The children and mother suffered minor knife injuries, according to the criminal complaint.
García-Sotelo told investigators, that he had the best sleep in 10 years during the first night in jail because his father always nagged at him. His father was killed because García-Sotelo thought he had broken his Xbox and couldn't play any games.
